Few shoes have managed to stay popular for more than a century – but Converse has done exactly that. What started out as a sports shoe from a Massachusetts rubber factory has become an iconic piece of global street fashion and self-expression.

The Converse story isn't just about how a brand grew – it's about how a simple canvas shoe became a cultural symbol for generations, from basketball courts to concert stages all the way to fashion runways.

The beginnings: when rubber met the court

The Converse Rubber Shoe Company was founded in 1908 in Massachusetts, USA. It originally made rubber-soled shoes and rain boots, but it quickly recognized the growing demand for footwear suitable for sport.

In 1917, the shoe that would change the sneaker world forever was born: the Converse All Star – the first shoe designed specifically for basketball. A canvas upper, a flexible rubber sole and a high top – groundbreaking technology at the time.

Chuck Taylor – the name everyone knows

In 1921, Chuck Taylor, a young basketball player, joined the company – he didn't just do a great job promoting the All Star, he was actively involved in developing it too. He's behind the version that, from 1932, was sold as the Chuck Taylor All Star – complete with his signature.

From the 1930s on, Converse became the most popular shoe in American basketball – for a long time, more than 90% of NBA players wore it.

From sport to style – Converse's pop culture revolution

Although Converse first became known mainly as a basketball shoe in the first half of the 20th century, it quickly outgrew the sports world and turned into a global style icon. In the 1970s and '80s, the brand became closely tied to punk and alternative music movements: bands like the Ramones and later Nirvana, along with iconic artists like Kurt Cobain, loved wearing them, so Converse came to embody a whole generation's rebellion, individuality and hunger for freedom.

But the shoe didn't just become a music symbol – it also became a kind of blank canvas for lovers of self-expression: for decades fans have been painting, doodling on, studding or restitching their Converse, turning every pair into a unique work of art.

From the 2000s the brand got a new boost, teaming up with streetwear brands, artists and influencers one after another. The classic, clean and unisex design became especially popular with the TikTok and Instagram generation, who mix retro vibes with a modern, personal style.

Unisex, evergreen, endlessly customizable

You might wonder: why does it never go out of style? There are plenty of reasons, but these are the biggest:

  • A simple shape that goes with everything
  • Unisex design – men, women: it works for everyone
  • DIY & individual style – this is the shoe you make your own
  • A timeless silhouette that goes just as well with jeans as with a skirt or a suit

The secret of Converse's success lies in minimalism. The clean canvas upper and rubber toe cap are a timeless design that hasn't gone out of style for decades – and never will.
